Ok, so I`m sending my application today (which is the last day) because I was fasting for seven weeks before Easter, so no meat, no milk, no eggs, no oil for five days and then on Saturday and Sunday you can have oil. Today is the second day of Easter, the first day we eat lamb and today I could chose to eat what I want and I wanted this as my favorite recipe.
I didn`t learn about this from one of my travels, I learnt this at home, at my mom`s home.
My mom was born and raised in a village (Jablanica) at the mountain Jablanica close to 2000 meters height, and there they were five children, so in order to support them, educate them and get them married, my grandfather went to work in Germany. They didn`t have much, they didn`t have toilets, just a wooden cabin and a hole in it and till this day I still don`t know how they took showers. But the surrounding is astonishing. So much green, so many trees and springs and fresh air and peace, like when Heidi visits his grandfather in Johanna Spyri`s book. Anyhow, since Christmas is in January and there is a lot a snow, my grandfather couldn`t come then and he was always coming in Easter which is in spring. They were seeing him once a year and my grandmother and her children were preparing the best meal that they could have made. They were slathering a pig and a cow from their own and prepared the meat in a various of ways so everyday that my grandfather is there he could have the best food.
Now, my uncles and aunt live in America, they were visiting us this April and my mom did this recipe for them.
Today, I`m married and went to my mom`s house for the holiday and I`m having the same meal.
We prepared it together.
It`s not a recipe that you learn as you travel, it`s a recipe that tastes like home, no matter where you are, whether Germany, or America, or couple of houses down the street, you always come here when you want to taste safe again.

Ingredients

  • 1 kilo beef
  • 1 kilo pork
  • onion
  • 1 spoon of oil
  • 1 bottle of wine
  • 500 grams mushrooms
  • salt
  • black papper
  • one cup of rice
  • two cups of water
  • 1 egg
  • 250 grams sour milk
  • Vegeta (mixture of dried veggies with salt)

Method

  • Cut the meat into small squares and chop the onion
  • Put some oil in a pan and add the onion, after it gets red add the meat, season it with salt or Vegeta and black paper
  • Cook till it`s little bit brown and add the a little bit of water, when the water it`s boiled, add the wine
  • Let it cook itself in a low heat for more than two hours
  • (I left mine on a wooden fire for couple of hours)
  • For the rice, put 2 cups of water in a pan and when it`s boiling put one cup of rice in it
  • Add Vegeta and black pepper and cook it on a medium heat till the water is dried
  • Mix the egg and the sour milk and pour it over the rice and put it in a oven which is preheated to 200 degree and leave it till there it gets crust
  • Serve it together and enjoy 😀
